what flies do I need

this question is one I am asked so often that i have made a page

so what are the essential flies that you need for still waters ?

it would be easy here to abuse your trust and lay out all my favourite patterns, what that would do is negate the need for you to experiment, try new things and investigate further what is available.

the things that have given me some of my best days out on the water!

so in light of this i have structured this in a slightly different way

Below is a list of food on the trout's menu that I would not dream of turning up to a new water without something to represent them. unnatural patterns are discussed further down this article.

  1. blood worm, the pupal stage of the midge
  2. buzzers, the nymphal stage of the midge
  3. shrimps/beetles
  4. tadpoles
  5. Bait fish
  6. mayfly nymphs
  7. sedge
  8. mayfly
  9. Moth
  10. Damsel nymph
  11. Crane fly
  12. Midge
  13.
